Vampires are so 2011.
If Friday's midnight showings are any indication, The Hunger Games is slated to give Twilight a serious run for its money. Fans of the YA adaptation lined up for late-night screenings of the dark, dystopian flick, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, their enthusiasm paid off big time–to the tune of nearly $20 million. If interest holds up, box office trackers predict Hunger Games could earn more than $130 million by the weekend's end. (By comparison, Twilight raked in $69 million during its debut weekend back in 2008.)
Final numbers aside, it's clear The Hunger Games' stars–including Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Katniss Everdeen, and Josh Hutcherson, who plays Peeta Mellark–are poised for Twilight-style superstardom.
Opening up to USA Today, Lawrence, 21, says she's still attempting to adjust to life in the spotlight. The Winter's Bone actress admits she was recently caught off-guard when she drove past a Hunger Games billboard, boasting a giant image of her face. "I was sitting at the red light, just staring at the poster," she tells the paper. "I kept trying to get it to hit home. 'That's you. Feel it.'…I tried, but to no avail."
For his part, Hutcherson, 19, is doing his best to stay calm, cool, and collected in the face of Hunger Games frenzy. Still, he told Us Weekly in February, "I have no idea how I'm going to handle [the attention]. I'm excited and nervous…[but] I really don't know what to expect!"
