Family time! Zooey Deschanel sat down with Us Weekly to dish on how cooking with her two kids Elsie, 3, and Charlie, 1, who she shares with husband Jacob Pechenik, has helped expand their palettes and been a bonding experience for their family.
“I love to cook,” The New Girl alum, 38, said. “The fun thing is that I actually usually like to make a variety of things. I’ll make a grain and something with beans and probably like a bunch of roasted vegetables. You just get three or four cookie sheets. Veggies shrink when you roast them. I put a little olive oil, salt and pepper on them and they taste really good.”
What’s most important to Deschanel? “Kids like to sample things, so we’ll have a little plate and I’ll just put them all out separately and my daughter can try. Usually there is one thing she likes more than others, so I make plenty of stuff,” said Deschanel, whose ATTN series Your Food’s Roots second season is premiering on Facebook watch today, Thursday, September 27.
And the actress doesn’t believe that there can be too many cooks in the kitchen. “We make chocolate chip cookies. They aren’t just something we buy and have in the house,” she told Us. “The process of making those things really teaches kids that they are precious, limited in quantity and you can’t just replenish them easily.”
She added: “I always think if we’re going to have dessert, it’s fun to make it. It’s always fun to make stuff with your kids. I like making zucchini muffins with my daughter because she can put the little cupcake liners in the cupcake tins and it’s easy for her to do that and she feels like she’s a part of it.”
