Sneaking off in the middle of the night wasn't exactly Mission: Impossible for Tom Cruise.
The actor boarded his private jet at 2 a.m. July 3 — his 50th birthday — at the Reykjavik airport in Iceland, three sources confirm to Us Weekly exclusively. Cruise's destination: California, his primary state of residence. (Cruise and soon-to-be ex-wife Katie Holmes, 33, own a $30 million mansion in Beverly Hills, in addition to properties in New York City and Telluride, Colorado.)
Despite Holmes' June 28 divorce filing, Cruise remained overseas for several days to shoot additional scenes for his new movie, Oblivion. "Tom just wants to work hard and finish everything on time," a source explained to Us over the weekend.
Holmes, meanwhile, has been busy furbishing her newly rented New York City apartment; she'd been quietly moving in to the $12,000-a-month residence for the past couple of weeks. On June 27, she was spotted purchasing flowers, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies and other items while shopping with her daughter, Suri, 6, at a local Whole Foods.
While the Jack and Jill actress' attorney told Us her "primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest," a rep for Cruise said he was "deeply saddened" by his wife's divorce filing. "[He] is concentrating on his three children. . . Please allow them their privacy." (Cruise and his second wife, Nicole Kidman, 45, share kids Conor, 17, and Isabella, 19.)
