The sound and the furry! Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski lost it on air on Monday, Dec. 8, while reporting about a "furry" convention in Chicago, which was evacuated this past weekend due to a gas leak.
"Chicago Tribune," she began to tell viewers in the segment, as the screen transitioned to the paper's bizarre story. "Nineteen people were hospitalized at a 'Furry' convention in Il… Illinois, after what's being called an 'intentional' leak of chlorine." She then trailed off and asked out loud: "Did I get that wrong? Okay."
Joe Scarborough then chimed in on the topic and asked: "What's a 'furry' convention?"
Brzezinski attempted to continue reporting the story but struggled to keep it together. "Officials were called," she said, as producers segued into footage of costumed people filing out of a building. "When a strong odor of chlorine… what?!" she continued, as she witnessed a clip of giant lions, and tigers, and unicorns (oh my!) ambling on the streets of Chi-Town. "Spread the…." she trailed off, unable to finish her sentence.
Willie Geist took over reading the teleprompter on behalf of his colleague, who could be seen with her head down while a red-faced Scarborough turned his head away from the camera in a fit of giggles. "They had to evacuate the building and everything," Geist said. "Sent the hotel guests and convention attendees into the cold night. Many still dressed in their furry, furry costumes."
Brzezinski and Scarborough, meanwhile, could not contain themselves and were seen shaking with laughter with their heads bowed. Upon learning what a "Furry" convention is Brzezinski fled the anchor's desk as Scarborough asked: "Where ya goin?!"
