Why so serious? Frances McDormand became a top trending topic on social media during Golden Globes Sunday, Jan. 11, after cameras repeatedly panned to her emotionless facial expressions inside the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
The Olive Kitteridge actress, 57, visibly appeared displeased during Amy Adams‘ acceptance speech for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy. Adams thanked her fellow female peers for serving as role models for her 4-year-old daughter.
“You speak to her so loudly,” the Big Eyes star gushed to the crowd. “She watches everything and sees everything and I am so grateful for all of you women in this room who have such a lovely beautiful voice and are speaking to my daughter.”
While most women (and men!) in the audience reacted positively to Adams’ remarks, McDormand simply looked on with an indifferent expression. In contrast, an approving Meryl Streep — who starred in Julie & Julia (2009) and Doubt (2008) with Adams — beamed at her young protege.

Later, the camera once again turned to McDormand as nominees for Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television were announced. While she remained unenthused as her fellow nominees Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jessica Lange, Frances O’Connor, and Allison Tolman were announced, McDormand somehow managed a tiny smile when she heard her name.
Ultimately, Gyllenhaal won the honor, prompting yet another non-plussed look from McDormand.
Interestingly enough, McDormand starred in the original Fargo movie in 1996. The film’s TV spin-off series received a Golden Globe on Sunday in the Best Mini-Series/Drama category.
