Bittersweet. Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson speculated with Meredith Vieira on Wednesday, Jan. 14, how Princess Diana would have been as a grandmother.
Princess Beatrice and Eugenie‘s mom, 55, was asked about Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s family, and how the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge has been handling her royal duties in the public eye. “I believe in love,” Ferguson noted of the couple. “I believe in just that goodness of love, and I think they are a beautiful example of a great family — totally in love.”
The royal in-law also spoke fondly about the future heir to the royal throne, baby Prince George. “That delicious little George!” she gushed. “So squishy, you know you want to eat him.” According to the Duchess of York, no royal — past or present — would have been better with the tot than Diana.
“She would have just been the naughtiest, funniest, and the best [grandmother] ever,” Ferguson said of her late close pal and sister-in-law. “She loved her boys [Princes William and Harry] so much. She would be so proud of all of them, and what they’ve achieved.”
The late Princess Di’s impact on her sons remains stronger than ever, with William and Harry mentioning her often during public appearances. Last April, William brought up his mother while touring Australia and New Zealand with his family of three. “My mother’s deep affection for Australia — which you were so kind to reciprocate — needs no reminder,” he said at the time.
Several months later, Prince Harry cried while meeting two young girls who had lost their mother in Brazil. “I’m quite emotional — just looking at them,” Harry told reporters, including Us Weekly. “I wanted to talk about my own experiences, but there is no point because it is just so far removed.”
William was 15 and Harry was 12 when Princess Diana died tragically in a Paris car crash in 1997.
“They really are extraordinary boys and Catherine is incredible,” Ferguson concluded Wednesday. “I just think it is all goodness, and we need to hear more about goodness, and Diana would have loved that.”
