Pulse, the gay Orlando nightclub where Omar Mateen killed 49 people and injured more than 50 others on June 12, was broken into overnight, police said on Thursday, July 14.
“We can confirm Pulse had a break-in last night,” the Orlando Police Department tweeted. “Details will be in the report.”
Sara Brady, a spokesperson for the club’s owners, told the Orlando Sentinel that the break-in occurred around 3 or 3:30 a.m.
“I think it’s fair to say that the owners are disappointed that someone would do that,” she said.
News 6 of Orlando reports that according to law enforcement, the intruder used a prying tool to force a piece of plywood away from the metal door frame and then forced his way in. The club has an alarm system, but it was not active at the time of the break-in, according to the police report obtained by the outlet.
The report did not note if anything was taken or if there was any damage to the club.
The break-in occurred just one day after the venue was released back to its owners. Up until Wednesday, police and other law enforcement agencies had been guarding the club, which has been treated as a crime scene since last month’s massacre, the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
“Our community is still grieving,” Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer tweeted on Thursday. “It’s disturbing that someone would try to bring additional pain to the victims.”
