His former loves on stage together! Prince’s ex-wife Mayte Garcia joined his ex-fiancée Sheila E. on stage while the musician paid tribute to the late icon during the 2016 BET Awards Sunday, June 26.
The professional dancer, 42, twirled across the stage during the performance while Sheila E., 58, belted out a selection of Prince’s hits, including “Earthquake,” “Erotic City,” “Let’s Work” and more. Garcia, who was wearing a black dress and sparkly necklace and went barefoot, was the focal point of the dancers during the almost eight-minute medley, which closed out the awards show.
“Thank you @sheilaedrummer for putting this together and asking me to be a part of it,” Garcia wrote on Instagram on Sunday. “There is nobody else I would of done this tribute with !! And the whole group. The love was so strong on stage. I’m overwhelmed with emotions!! #gratefulbutsad.”
“Gia was in the audience tonight. … She loved it,” she added on another Instagram picture of her backstage with her daughter, whom the single mom adopted in 2013. Prior to her performance, Garcia stunned on the BET red carpet in a floral Stello gown and Christian Louboutin shoes.
Garcia met Prince in 1990, when she was only 16, and he hired her to dance on his Diamonds and Pearls tour. She even inspired his 1995 hit “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World,” and the couple married on Valentine’s Day in 1996. Later that year, they welcomed a son, Boy Gregory, but the baby tragically died just one week later of Pfeiffer syndrome. The pair eventually split in June 2000.
As Us Weekly previously reported, Prince died at the age of 57 on April 21 from an accidental fentanyl overdose. He was found in the elevator of his Paisley Park studio, in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
