This! This! The Lonely Island reunited on The Tonight Show on Monday, May 16, and covered their smash hit, “I’m on a Boat,” with the help of host Jimmy Fallon, The Roots and … classroom instruments.
The parody group — consisting of Saturday Night Live alums Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone — first debuted their single “I’m on a Boat” in 2009 with a ridiculous music video shot on a yacht. They were also revered that same year after releasing their other music video for “J-zz in My Pants.”
Brooklyn Nine-Nine lead Samberg kicked off the performance with a scarf around his neck and a rubber duck in hand. Fallon expertly added a percussion element to the performance with a block. All of the Lonely Island members and the Roots bandmaster were clad from head to toe in sailor outfits and shades.
Of course it wouldn’t be a classroom instruments session without a xylophone and, well, a plastic mermaid. Questlove also hilariously stood in the far back corner and very seriously beat two hand clappers together.
The trio will once again bring laughs to theaters everywhere on June 3, when their mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is released.
