Still mourning. Jimmy Fallon‘s Tonight Show continued to pay tribute to Prince on Tuesday, April 26, when D’Angelo was joined by Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum (who make up a Prince cover band called Princess) for a stunning performance of “Sometimes It Snows in April.”
The entire stage was shrouded in atmospheric purple lighting as D’Angelo sat at the keyboard wearing a white fur gilet and black fedora, while Rudloph and Lieberum provided backup harmonies to the side of the grand piano.
Partway through the piece, D’Angelo changed the lyrics to “I often dream of heaven, and I know that Prince’s there.”
Earlier in the evening, Lieberum took to Facebook to promote the performance, revealing how emotional it was for her.
“Hold on to your teardrops. Me, Maya and D’Angelo sing ‘Sometimes It Snows In April’ on the Tonight Show this evening. I somehow made it through without balling,” she wrote.
Questlove, who leads The Roots, Fallon’s house band, also honored the “Purple Rain” hitmaker, who passed away on Thursday, 21 April, at just 57, by wearing a purple bow tie with the musical legend’s name emblazoned on it.
