The gloves are off. Melissa McCarthy revealed on Tuesday, February 2, that she was never asked to reprise her role as Sookie St. James in Netflix’s Gilmore Girls revival.
The Boss star, 45, explained her absence when a fan asked for her to return to Stars Hollow.
“Thanks for the invite, but sadly no one asked me or Sookie to come back to Stars Hollow,” the Mike & Molly actress replied via Twitter. “Wish them all the best!!”

As previously reported, Netflix announced last week that Lauren Graham (Lorelai Gilmore) and Alexis Bledel (Rory Gilmore) would be officially reprising their roles for four 90-minute episodes. It’s been unclear whether McCarthy would return for the highly anticipated production.
McCarthy’s tweet may be in response to Amy Sherman-Palladino’s recent comments. The Gilmore Girls co-creator told TVLine on Monday that she’s reached out to McCarthy’s team to no avail.
“She’s really f–king busy. But the thing I have said [to her team] is, ‘Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon free, I’ll write her a scene,” Sherman-Palladino said.
“Melissa was one of us. If she has a spare moment to run over [to the set] — even if for just a cameo — we would be totally game,” she continued. “And if it’s a last-minute thing, I would write her in and we would figure it out. That’s the way we left it.”
McCarthy — who didn’t attend the show’s reunion at the ATX Television Festival last June — starred as Lorelai’s BFF and Dragonfly Inn’s head chef on the beloved series, which ran from 2000 to 2007. Since then, she’s become a bona fide movie star, with hits such as Bridesmaids, Identify Thief, The Heat and Spy. She will appear in the all-female Ghostbusters reboot, which hits theaters this year.
