
Jason Isbell
Jason Isbell (born Michael Jason Isbell) is a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter known for his introspective lyrics and influential role in modern Americana and country music. Isbell was born in Green Hill, Alabama. He grew up surrounded by music, influenced by Southern rock and country sounds from an early age. He briefly enrolled at the University of Memphis, where he studied English before leaving college to pursue music full time.
He began his professional career in the early 2000s as a member of the Southern rock band Drive-By Truckers, cofounded by Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley. Isbell joined the group in 2001 and contributed songs that helped elevate the band’s profile, including “Decoration Day.” He announced his departure from the group in 2007 and soon launched his solo career, forming Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit.
Isbell achieved widespread recognition with albums such as Southeastern (2013), Something More Than Free (2015) and Reunions (2020). His songwriting has earned him multiple Grammy Awards over the years, including Best Americana Album for Weathervanes (2023). He is known for songs like “Cover Me Up,” “If We Were Vampires” and “24 Frames,” which showcase his focus on personal struggle, recovery and relationships.
Isbell wed fellow singer-songwriter Amanda Shires in 2013. The couple share one daughter, Mercy Rose (born in 2015). In 2023, Isbell and Shires announced their divorce. He later moved on with Anna Weyant.
