Loretta Lynn
Loretta Lynn (born Loretta Webb) was a Grammy Award-winning country music singer and songwriter. Lynn was born in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky, and raised as the oldest of eight children in a rural coal-mining community. Her father worked as a coal miner and farmer, and music was a part of everyday life in their household. Lynn married Oliver “Doolittle” Lynn at age 15, spending her early adult years raising a family before pursuing a professional music career.
Lynn began performing locally in the late 1950s and recorded her first single, “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl,” in 1960. The song became a hit after she promoted it herself at radio stations across the country, leading to a recording contract with Decca Records. Throughout the 1960s, Lynn rose to prominence in Nashville with a series of songs that challenged traditional country norms, earning her membership in the Grand Ole Opry in 1962.
Over her decades-long career, Lynn released numerous hit albums and singles, including You Ain’t Woman Enough (1966), Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind) (1967) and Coal Miner’s Daughter (1971). She was awarded multiple Grammys and Country Music Association honors, including Entertainer of the Year at the 1972 CMAs, becoming the first woman to receive the title. She frequently collaborated with Conway Twitty throughout her career and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1988.
Lynn married Oliver in 1948 and remained with him until his death in 1996. They had six children: Betty Sue (1948 to 2013), Jack Benny (1949 to 1984), Ernest Ray (born in 1951), Clara Marie (born in 1952) and twins Peggy and Patsy (born in 1964).
Lynn died in her sleep on October 4, 2022, at the age of 90.
