About

Rob Reiner was a director, actor, producer and screenwriter. The son of actors Estelle and Carl Reiner, Rob was born in The Bronx and raised in New Rochelle, New York. He went on to study at the UCLA Film School.

Rob’s Hollywood career started out with bit roles on TV before he was cast as Michael Stivic — a.k.a. Meathead — on Norman Lear‘s All in the Family. Rob played Archie Bunker’s liberal son-in-law from 1971 to 1978. Rob won two Emmy Awards for his performance from a total of five nominations. He also earned five Golden Globe nods.

Beginning in the 1980s, Rob moved behind the camera. Movies like This Is Spinal Tap (1984), Stand by Me (1986) and The Princess Bride (1987) helped Rob become an established director. He also directed When Harry Met Sally (1989), Misery (1990) and A Few Good Men (1992), among other hits.

As his directorial career continued, Rob made frequent appearances on screen with memorable roles in Sleepless in Seattle (1993), The First Wives Club (1996) and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). He returned to TV on 30 Rock, New Girl, The Bear and more.

Off camera, Rob was married twice. He wed fellow actress and director Penny Marshall in 1971, adopting her daughter, Tracy Reiner. The former couple divorced in 1981.

Rob went on to marry Michele Singer Reiner in 1989, welcoming three children: sons Jake and Nick and daughter Romy.

News broke in December 2025 that Rob and Michele were found dead in their Los Angeles home. He was 78 years old.
