Soleil Moon Frye Shares Easy Halloween Party Planning Tips for Kids

Soleil Moon Frye and her daughters
Soleil Moon Frye and her daughters Jagger and Poet went as cheerleaders for Halloween 2012.

Soleil Moon Frye‘s motto for celebrating Halloween: Go big or go home! The actress, who just released her own kid-centric entertaining book, Let’s Get This Party Started!, tells Us Weekly she and her husband Jason Goldberg and their daughters Poet, 8, and Jagger, 5, can’t wait for Oct. 31 every year. “Halloween at our house is really fun! We decorate like crazy,” the former Punky Brewster star shares.

On the family’s fall to-do list? Hitting the pumpkin patch in Los Angeles and decking out their pumpkins with everything from chalkboard paint to glitter. The family also comes together to make caramel apples, a recipe Frye, 37, shares in Let’s Get This Party Started!.

Speaking of Halloween treats, Frye, the host of OWN’s Home Made Simple and creator of her own Moonfrye app, tells Us the household candy of choice is Kit-Kats. “We give out almost all candies, but nothing with nuts, because Poet’s allergic. I never get enough candy, though, so I’m always the person raiding the pantry at the end of the night for pretzels,” jokes Frye. “I go from giving handfuls of candy to granola bars at the end of the night!”

For a Halloween treat that gets the kids involved, try whipping up Frye’s festive, candy-covered caramel apples at your next bash.

CARAMEL APPLES (Yields 6)

Ingredients
– 6 apples (green or red)
– 6 sticks for apples
– Parchment paper
– 1 package of individually wrapped caramels
– 2 tablespoons water

Optional toppings
– 1 cup mini marshmallows
– 1 cup mini chocolate chips
– 1 cup mini M&Ms
– 1 cup chopped walnuts
– 1 cup shredded coconut
– 1 cup sprinkles

Instructions
Remove the stems and insert the sticks at the top, three-quarters of the way into each apple. Lightly grease parchment paper and place on a baking sheet or tray. Unwrap the caramels and place into a saucepan with the water on low heat, stirring frequently. Once melted and smooth, remove from heat. Dip each apple into the caramel sauce and coat well. Let the excess caramel drip off, then decorate with your favorite toppings. Place each apple on the parchment paper. Wait for caramel to cool and harden before enjoying.
