Say it ain’t so! Catfish host Nev Schulman posted a mysterious tweet hinting that the hit MTV series was canceled. Fans, naturally, freaked out.
“We are breaking up. Catfish is no longer,” the 31-year-old executive producer tweeted on Tuesday, June 21.
Cohost and cameraman Max Joseph, however, didn’t post an announcement on his account, which confused social media users even more. And if things weren’t complicated enough, Schulman’s tweet was deleted moments later.
“This is a joke right?” one Twitter user wrote, while another added, “What? No? That’s not allowed.”
The TV personality, who is engaged to his pregnant girlfriend, Laura Perlongo, posted a follow-up tweet on Tuesday afternoon, writing, “Catfish is alive and well! As is my bromance with @maxjoseph.”
Schulman didn’t acknowledge his since-deleted post, but the Twitterverse speculated that the Catfish host was merely a victim of yet another Twitter hack. Earlier in the day, Joseph, 34, told his 430,000 followers that his account was hacked by a user who posted several Donald Trump tweets.
“Cruel joke Nev, LOL! Or were you hacked?” one user asked.
The MTV docuseries, which premiered in November 2012, is based on the 2010 film of the same name. The reality show follows people who create fake profiles online using someone else’s photos and false information to pretend to be someone other than themselves. The series’ subjects typically “catfish” their unsuspecting victims into falling in love with them.
