Move over, Chrissy Teigen cry face! While the supermodel had a big, tearful moment at last year’s Golden Globes, the 73rd awards show, held Sunday, January 10, was all about Denzel Washington‘s cringe face following a joke made by Jamie Foxx.
Washington, 61, was joined by his family (including his hot son!) at the Beverly Hilton hotel to accept the Cecil B. DeMille award on Sunday night. Like many of his peers — cough, Leo — the John Q actor was caught off guard by the cameras, including one notable reaction when Foxx, 48, made an awkward joke alongside copresenter Lily James.
“Thank you, Will. Thank you, Denzel, for letting me borrow the goatee,” Foxx said as Washington grinned.
“This is our first time, our first time meeting,” Foxx continued. “People that know what I’m talking about, know what I’m talking about.”
While there was sparse laughter heard throughout the ballroom, Washington gritted his teeth and his smile faded during Foxx’s failed bit.
The two, however, are longtime buddies. In a roundtable discussion with The Hollywood Reporter in 2014, Foxx recalled how enamored he was with Washington when they first met.
“I saw Denzel coming out of the Roxbury one night. So I said, ‘Oh s–t, Denzel!’ … And I bolt past security, and he does this move [blocks with elbow]. And he’s like, ‘Calm down,'” Foxx shared in the discussion as Washington cracked up. “His talent — all of these guys — it’s the talent is what’s going to keep us preserved.”
