Raiding grandma’s closet? Jenna Bush Hager dressed up as her grandmother Barbara Bush on the Today show Monday, October 31, and it was uncanny.
The morning show cohosts all chose costumes of ’90s icons, so Hager, 34, decided to go as the former first lady, 91, who held the role from 1989 to 1993, when her husband, George H.W. Bush, was president.
Hager donned a red blazer, navy skirt and Bush’s signature pearl necklace along with a white wig to play her paternal grandmother. To go with the ’90s theme, she hilariously danced the Macarena in the Today show plaza in NYC’s Rockefeller Center.
“This is a flash forward to what I’m going to look like in my golden years,” the children’s book author said.
Then, Hager’s cohosts surprised her by setting up a video call with Bush, who was wearing a witch’s hat, an orange sweater and pearls, of course, to weigh in on her granddaughter’s costume.
“I heard [Jenna] was going to dress up like a witch, so I did too,” Bush joked.
Hager responded, “I didn’t say that, Gammy. I didn’t say that. That was Matt [Lauer]. I love dressing up as my favorite first lady, besides my mom [Laura Bush].”
All jokes aside, Barbara loved the throwback outfits. “You look better than I ever looked,” she told Hager.
