Talk about some fancy extensions! Country music legend Willie Nelson is known for his legendary voice and treasured songbook, affinity for smoking weed, and his signature braided pigtails. According to Reuters, the 81-year-old’s braids, which were cut in the ‘80s when his hair was still red, sold at an auction for $37,000.
The auction was held on Sunday, Oct. 5 in Arizona at the estate of the late Waylon Jennings, a prominent member of the “outlaw country” music scene of the ‘70s. Jennings, who died in 2002, received Nelson’s braids at a 1983 party thrown by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash to celebrate his sobriety.
The outlaw country music movement centered around Nelson and Jennings, who refused to adhere to Nashville’s standards. Along with Jessi Colter and Tompall Glaser, the duo released the 1976 album Wanted! The Outlaws, which was the first country album to sell a million copies.
The buyer of Nelson’s braids was not released. Reuters noted that Buddy Holly’s Ariel Cyclone motorcycle was also sold for $450,000. Other auctioned items included Muhammad Ali’s boxing gloves and robe, a handwritten letter from John Lennon to Jennings, and Hank Williams’ Nudie cowboy boots.
