Goodbye, No. 2! The New York Yankees will officially retire Derek Jeter’s number on Mother’s Day, May 14, 2017, the team announced on Twitter Tuesday, December 6.
The Yankees will also unveil a plaque at NYC’s Monument Park in honor of the 42-year-old baseball legend during the Yankees’ home game against the Houston Astros.
Jeter retired in 2014 after spending all 20 MLB seasons with the New York team. He was a five-time World Series champion and 14-time All-Star. Jeter’s No. 2 will be the 21st number retired by the MLB club, and the last single-digit number besides zero, meaning no Yankee will ever don Nos. 1 through 9 again.

The shortstop announced in February 2014 that his baseball career would be coming to a close. “As I suffered through a bunch of injuries, I realized that some of the things that always came easily to me and were always fun had started to become a struggle. The one thing I always said to myself was that when baseball started to feel more like a job, it would be time to move forward,” he wrote on Facebook. “I could not be more sure. I know it in my heart. The 2014 season will be my last year playing professional baseball.”
Since his retirement, the former Yankees captain has had more time for his personal life. He got engaged to model Hannah Davis in October 2015, and the couple tied the knot this past July in a romantic ceremony on a golf course at a resort in St. Helena, California.
Tickets to the Mother’s Day game are not yet available, except as part of full-season and partial-season ticket plans.
