Johnny Depp and Amber Heard called it quits in May 2016, after just more than a year of marriage — take a look back at the way they were in photo.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard: The Way They Were
The low-key lovebirds coordinated in black for The Art of Elysium's 7th Annual HEAVEN Gala. Us Weekly announced that same month that the couple were engaged. "Johnny is a wonderful person to work with," Heard told Digital Spy in 2011. "He's just a true artist and wonderful to be around. I'm very lucky."
The Danish Girl actress and Depp kept close at the Texas Film Awards at Austin Studios in Austin, Texas. The following month, the hunky star opened up about wanting kids with Heard. "I love kids. I have two, and they're perfect. Man, I'd make 100. But I've got the easy gig, right?" he told Entertainment Tonight.
Staying down South! Heard couldn't keep her eyes off of the Black Mass star while attending a rodeo at the Travis Expo Center in Austin, Texas. The actress previously told Flare magazine that she wanted to keep their relationship private. "It’s not part of my professional life. I want to be an artist. I don’t want to be a celebrity," she said.
Heard and the Edward Scissorhands star attended the 8th Annual HEAVEN Gala at Hangar 8 in L.A. One month earlier, Us Weekly exclusively revealed that the actress had second thoughts about getting married. "She's realizing she might be happier with someone else," a source told Us at the time of her cold feet.
Shine bright like a diamond. The pair stepped out to promote Heard's movie The Danish Girl at the 72nd Venice Film Festival in Venice, Italy. "Nothing is a dramatic change," Heard told Elle of married life that June. "We've been together for a long time now, so it's been a fairly organic process. I have a fiercely independent spirit."
Date night. Heard continued to support Depp at the gala screening of Black Mass at the BFI London Film Festival in London. That same month, Heard opened up about being a stepmother to Depp's children. "[It’s] an honor and the greatest, most surprising gift I have ever received in my life," she told Marie Claire.
While accepting the Palm Springs Desert Achievement Award in Florida, Depp implied that the couple's marriage took work. "I also have to thank my wife, Amber, for putting up with me. For living with all these characters, which can't be easy," he said. "It's hard for me, it's gotta be hard for her."
Depp and Heard made several headlines in early 2016. In April, they filmed a cringeworthy apology video for illegally bringing their dogs to Australia. In May, Heard attended the Costume Institute Gala at Metropolitan Museum of Art solo in NYC while Depp went stag to his Alice Through the Looking Glass Hollywood premiere.
Calling it quits. Heard filed for divorce on May 23 and cited irreconcilable differences. Depp asked the judge to reject Heard's request for spousal support and released a statement about the split on May 26. "Given the brevity of this marriage and the most recent and tragic loss of his mother, Johnny will not respond to any of the salacious false stories, gossip, misinformation and lies about his personal life," Depp's rep told Us Weekly. "Hopefully the dissolution of this short marriage will be resolved quickly." On May 27, TMZ reported that Heard accused Depp of domestic violence and filed a restraining order.
