Spoiler alert! If you have not watched the season 20 finale of The Bachelor, avert your eyes now.
After several weeks of group dates, rose ceremonies and tearful goodbyes, Ben Higgins reached the end of his journey on the Bachelor in ABC’s season 20 finale on Monday, March 14. Forced to choose between two women, Lauren Bushnell and JoJo Fletcher, the Denver-based software salesman, 26, followed his heart — right to Bushnell.
After saying goodbye to Fletcher, 24, Higgins got down on one knee and proposed to Bushnell, 25, with a Neil Lane diamond engagement ring worth $100,000. But first he called his bride-to-be’s father.
“The reason I’m calling is that I love your daughter a lot, and I wish I could have told you that when I was in Portland, [Oregon]. But I am so confident, so excited, and I am ready to try and make your daughter the happiest woman in the world, forever,” he told Bushnell’s dad. “And I would like to ask you for your daughter’s hand in marriage.”
Mr. Bushnell gave his blessing, of course — and then there was just one question left to ask.
“I came into this honestly feeling unlovable. Like I couldn’t be loved or that I was never gonna find that person to love me fully,” Higgins told Bushnell when she met him for the final and most important rose ceremony. “And then we go through this experience. It’s been a journey that’s full of goodbyes. Lauren, I never want to say goodbye to you.”
He continued: “I want to wake up every morning and kiss you on the face. I want to go to bed at night and know that in the morning, I’m gonna wake up to the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes on. My desire from here on out is to live for you, commit to you, love you, hold you, kiss you a lot. Lauren, I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Lauren, will you marry me? … You’re my person.”
