From the man himself! Kato Kaelin, one of the key witnesses during O.J. Simpson‘s 1995 trial in the murders of Nicole Simpson Brown and Ron Goldman, continues to find discrepancies in FX’s American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson. The former radio personality tells Us Weekly in an exclusive statement that there were numerous issues with episode 2, which aired on Tuesday, February 9.
“One of the most powerful scenes in episode 2 is when Robert Kardashian tells O.J.’s family that he’s killed himself and proceeds to read the suicide letter,” Kaelin, 56, tells Us. “Kato is in this scene sitting with O.J.’s family — but that never happened. I wasn’t there. Which means the following scene, when SWAT officers stormed the house ordering everyone out and Billy Magnussen makes a theatrical exit also never happened. #NotADocumentary.”
In the episode, Simpson leaves behind three suicide notes, which the former NFL star allegedly wrote before the larger-than-life slow-speed chase began in that infamous 1994 white Bronco. Kaelin — portrayed by Billy Magnussen — is seen with Simpson’s family during the emotional moment when defense attorney Robert Shapiro (John Travolta) and Robert Kardashian (David Schwimmer) read one of the notes aloud.
Suddenly, a family member shouts, “Look!” and the show cuts to footage of the Bronco steering its way down the highway.
Kaelin, who’s also designed a menswear line called Slacker Wear, has publicly spoken out against the FX series on numerous occasions, and even penned a detailed review for the New York Daily News after last week’s premiere.
“Whether it be for comedic relief or getting the most bang out of their buck for that god-awful wig (anyone remember Dana Carvey playing Garth from Wayne’s World?), there’s too much Kato Kaelin in this series — even for Kato Kaelin’s taste!” the Sports Haters host wrote. “The second episode shows Kato sitting with O.J.’s family when Robert Kardashian announces that O.J. killed himself and reads the suicide note. I was never there. Did that actually happen? I don’t know. I just know I wasn’t there.… The point is, that never happened.”
