BFF face-off! As part of Destiny’s Child, Kelly Rowland and Beyonce spent years standing side by side one another accepting MTV Moonmen at the Video Music Awards.
The 2014 awards show, however, will force the divas to face off for the same trophy, Best Video With a Social Message. Denying any rivalry with her former bandmate, Rowland did confirm to Us Weekly that she’s in it to win it. “I want that award!” she told Us during a July 31 interview promoting her work with Caress.
The pregnant singer, recognized for “Dirty Laundry,” and “Pretty Hurts” nominee Beyonce, will vie for the trophy along with Angel Haze (“Battle Cry”), J. Cole (“Crooked Smile”), David Guetta (“One Voice”) and Avicii (“Hey Brother”).
“As much as you’re able to have the gift of music to share with people, when you’re able to connect the visuals together [through the video], it just makes it even more magical,” Rowland told Us.
This year marks 14 years since Rowland made her VMA debut with Destiny’s Child, and the singer looked back fondly on that appearance — and the band’s outfit choice styled by Beyonce’s mom, Tina Knowles. “[In 2000], I remember feeling absolutely fabulous! Destiny’s Child wore these studded leather corsets with different embellishments,” said Rowland, who wore her corset with black leather hot pants and thigh-high stiletto boots.
“It was just such a moment, which I think is what is so great about the VMAs because anything goes,” Rowland told Us. “I remember not being able to breathe to save my life, but I felt amazing!”
