Who’s counting? Melissa McCarthy was pretty excited when she stepped onto the Saturday Night Live stage for her opening monologue on February 13 and launched into a number about hosting the show five times. Only problem was she was wrong.
After a spirited song-and-dance number set to ’70s disco hit “Born to Be Alive” by Patrick Hernandez, SNL cast member Kenan Thompson came out wearing a glittery number 5 costume and broke the bad news to the Mike & Molly star: She’s only hosted the show four times.
Her appearance on the SNL 40 primetime special last February didn’t count and was more like 1/16 of a hosting appearance, Thompson explained as he handed her a pair of custom-made glasses to prove it.
Later in the show McCarthy, 45, was featured in a hilarious sketch about a focus group screening of a horror film, and, as she’s done on previous SNL appearances, the actress went wild, pulling off Pete Davidson‘s shirt and throwing her soda.
The episode’s musical guest was Kanye West, who performed two numbers and appeared in a rap battle with Kyle Mooney. He subsequently broke the internet when he announced at the end of his performance that his highly anticipated album, The Life of Pablo, had finally been released online.
