The Droughtlander is over! Outlander returns for the second half of its debut season on Saturday, April 4, and it promises to be as full of scenic Scottish Highlands landscapes — and steamy sex scenes — as the first half. Especially that sex part.
Nothing will top the racy wedding sex scene between mysterious time-traveling Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and her hunky new 18th century husband, Jamie (Sam Heughan), but Balfe promised there will be plenty more intimate moments between the newlyweds.
“They’re different because the story and the relationship is evolving, but yes, I’d say there is more of that ahead,” Balfe revealed to Us Weekly on the red carpet at Outlander‘s New York City mid-season premiere event on April 1.
Heughan dished to Us Weekly about the differences between the wedding scene and the future marital relations between the couple. “[The wedding scene] was very much about two individuals getting to know each other, so it was sensual and innocent, in a way, but now their relationship has moved on from that,” he spilled. “I think any time we do a scene like that, we want it to be about their relationship moving forward, so it’s going to get more intense.”
In fact, “anything coming up will be more climactic,” Heughan confessed, pausing to chuckle because that’s what she said, “as the story continues.”
There’s actual plot happening during the non-sex scenes of the Starz drama, too. “The second half of the season is stronger,” Heughan said. “The first half, we were really setting up relationships. The second half, the momentum really carries on. We see a lot more of the characters and it becomes a lot less black and white. The politics are played out within the castle, with the brothers, and Jamie and Claire are really tested a lot. The problem of them being from different time periods comes to a head and they both learn from it, ultimately, but it’s a long and difficult process.”
Outlander airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. ET on Starz.
