If you’re like Us, you’re probably huddled in the corner of your bed and sobbing after watching the Tuesday, October 11, episode of This Is Us. Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia‘s new NBC drama is on its third episode, and it’s going strong. We expect there to be many seasons of This Is Us–induced tears in the future!
In the meantime, here are eight scenes that had us reaching for a crate of tissues.
When Kate Sang Like an Angel
The episode started off with Kate (Chrissy Metz) singing in the shower with the voice of an actual angel. The woman’s got pipes! Her not-quite-official boyfriend, Toby (Chris Sullivan), poked his head in the bathroom to investigate her perfect pitch and was greeted with a punch in the face. Don’t walk in on a woman who’s singing in the shower!
New Twist: Rebecca Has Met William Before
When Rebecca (Moore) showed up unannounced at the house of her adult son Randall (Sterling K. Brown), he scrambled — unprepared to tell his mom that his biological father, William (Ron Cephas Jones), was living there. When Randall came clean to his mother, she asked to speak with William alone. Then we were hit with this week’s huge twist: Rebecca has met William before. When William said, “You look well,” our jaws dropped to the floor.
William Wanted to See His Son; Rebecca Wouldn’t Let Him
We found out through flashbacks that shortly after the triplets were born, Rebecca tracked down William to find out where Randall (whose name was originally Kyle?) came from — a secret she’s kept from her son his entire life. When meeting William (then, nicknamed “Shakespeare”), he told her to rename his son. We guess William’s not a fan of the name Kyle? Another moment that made us teary-eyed was when William asked to check in on his son from time to time, and Rebecca said no.
Toby Is the Best Semi-Boyfriend Ever
Toby was clearly gunning for Kate’s affection when he went to great lengths to win her over by whisking her away to her first “surprise” singing gig. Dressed as an odd combination of both paparazzo and chauffeur, he drove her to an old folks’ home, where she stunned the audience with her rendition of “Time After Time.” Clearly Toby’s courting game is on point because the scene ended with them making out in a nursing-home closet.
Jack Hints at Rebecca’s Postpartum Depression
In a moving scene with Jack (Ventimiglia) and the doctor who delivered the triplets, Jack admits that his wife seemed “broken” after giving birth. He even asked the doc if he could “fix her.” The wise old doctor sat him down and told him to let her grieve the loss of her third triplet however she needs to. So many sobs!
Kevin Fired Kate as His Assistant
After having a meltdown over his impending move to New York, the dashingly handsome but perpetually annoying Kevin (Justin Hartley) interrupted his sister’s makeout sesh and begged her to come to his apartment. When she arrived, she opened up to him about her date with Toby and how it will never work out, saying she doesn’t “need to be in a relationship.” Knowing that she needed to focus on herself, Kevin fired her on the spot, saying maybe some distance would serve them well. A tear fell down our cheek when Kate said, “I don’t know who I am if I’m not your sister.” A bucket of tears came down when Kevin responded, “I do. You’re gonna love her.”
William’s Cancer Has Metastasized
When Randall took his father to the hospital for a checkup, we audibly gasped when the doctor revealed the cancer had metastasized. Back at the house, Randall’s wife, Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), urged Randall to get to know his father with the time they have left. Our tears were crying tears.
Jack and Rebecca Bond Over Missing the Child They Lost
The episode ended with Rebecca and Jack, back in the 1970s, bonding over their lost child. Rebecca revealed to her husband, “I can’t stop thinking about the one we lost, Jack.” Our eyes heaved salty droplets when Jack responded, “Me too. That’s all I think about.” We just wanted to hug them through our TVs!
Tell Us: When will they explain Rebecca’s new husband, Miguel? Will we ever find out what happened to Jack?
This Is Us airs on NBC Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET.
