The 2016 MTV Video Music Award nominations were announced on Tuesday, July 26, and the race for Video of the Year is going to be tight!
Beyoncé leads the pack of this year's competitors with 11 nominations for Lemonade, just ahead of Adele, who earned nods in eight categories. Adele — “Hello”
Adele’s sepia-toned tale of confronting your past and coming to terms with lost love reminded us how to feel. The emotional video — featuring 90210’s Tristan Wilds — was also fodder for a memorable Saturday Night Live skit.
Beyoncé — "Formation"
The "Halo" singer's New Orleans-set ode to black culture and female empowerment made waves when it dropped in May 2016. Highlighting the destruction that still remains in New Orleans, as well as the Black Lives Matter movement, Beyoncé made a powerful statement that resonated through her entire 2016 visual album, Lemonade.
Drake — "Hotline Bling"
The "One Dance" singer's dance moves spawned many viral memes, but his neon-lit video for the late-night booty call song reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Justin Bieber — "Sorry"
Although the music video for "Sorry" doesn't feature Bieber at all, the twerking troop of women give the video a vibe of empowerment. Clad in '90s-esque neon garb, the Ladies of ReQuest and the Royal Family Dance Crews from the Palace Dance Studio prove it's never too late to say sorry.
Kanye West — "Famous"
The NSFW video — which features naked wax models of West along with wife Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift, Donald Trump, Rihanna and more — went viral when it launched in June 2016. The controversial video is a reimagining of Vincent Desiderio's Sleep and comments on the lack of privacy that comes with fame.
