The Cannes red carpet always proves to be a major scene — from the daring gowns to the free-the-nipple moments (looking at you Kendall), it’s a lot to take in. One such moment you may have missed: Elsa Hosk channeled Marilyn Monroe while on the red carpet this weekend.
Fans of classic film will recall the iconic pink dress and hair and makeup that Marilyn Monroe wore (pink gloves and diamonds included) to sing “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” in 1953’s Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Arguably Monroe’s most iconic cinematic moment aside from that notorious scene in a white dress, it has been imitated by many a celebrity including Madonna — and now it’s gotten the millennial pink treatment.
First and foremost, Elsa’s Alberta Ferretti gown had a similar sweetheart neckline cut but from there it was to be more fitted and had an added voluminous skirt as a train. And, to up the sex appeal, it had a cutout midriff ornamented by two bow ties. One constant: the diamonds. Hosk wore a layered sparkling choker and matching cuff to adorn the remix of the classic costume.
Another similarity between the two looks: the hairstyles. Though Monroe’s platinum mane was much shorter, Hosk wore her hair in similarly coiffed finger waves, evoking Old Hollywood elegance. Then, instead of the bright reddish pink lip that Marilyn wore in the movies, Hosk wore a paler shade of tea rose pink on her pout — Charlotte Tilbury’s The Duchess, to be specific, according to her makeup artist Vincent Oquendo who uploaded a pic of her applying her lipstick to his Instagram feed.
The take away here is by all means use classic film as a reference, but be sure to make tweaks to the look to keep it current and not so costume-y!
