Fashion rules exist to be broken — Keira Knightley has made us believers. The Colette actress attended the Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards in London on Tuesday, October 30, wearing an unexpected but utterly chic pleated pastel blue Givenchy dress.
The midi-length frock, which had a high neck, pleated sleeves and an asymmetrical hi-low skirt looked seasonally appropriate in spite of the spring-time color palette for a number of reasons. First, the texture of the ruffles add interest without resorting to a whimsical pattern, which, with said color, might look more appropriate during late spring or summer. Second, it’s all about the cut. Had the frock been sleeveless, it would have looked decidedly more warm-weather-appropriate than for the season when everyone is reaching for rich jewel tones, velvet fabrics and sumptuous patterns.
Adding the timeless appeal is her matching satin minaudière and white pumps with pattern embellished toes.
Since the two-time Oscar nominee’s outfit and accessories were less than predictable, she balanced the look by keeping her hair and makeup classic. Knightley’s signature brown smokey eye and nude pink cheeks and lips came courtesy of longtime makeup artist Lisa Eldridge, while celebrity hairstylist Luke Hersheson straightened the actress’ chestnut strands and gave them an unfussy but shiny finish. And the full picture? It just worked.
Knightley is known for her game-changing fashion choices — she was even one of the first celebrities to rock the modest dress trend in late 2017, with Olivia Wilde following suit this year. One thing is clear: we’ve all got the ok-go to break out our Easter tones a bit early this year.
