Salma Hayek‘s younger brother was involved in a fatal car crash on Sunday, Feb. 23, the Los Angeles Times reports.
According to the paper, Sami Hayek, 40, lost control of his Ford GT sports car and collided with a 2011 Toyota Tacoma truck on Sunset Boulevard near Mapleton Drive in the late afternoon. His passenger, Grammy-award winning art director Ian Cuttler Sala, 43, was killed at the scene. He “sustained major blunt-force trauma to his body,” CNN reports.
Sala won a Best Art Direction Grammy Award in 2006 for his work on Johnny Cash: The Legend box set. His personal website notes that he worked for Sony Music for nine years, and created visual campaigns for stars like Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Marc Anthony, and Billy Joel. After leaving the company, he became a full-time photographer.
Hayek — an LA-based furniture designer — suffered several broken ribs, and was treated at a Los Angeles hospital on Monday. The 20-year-old driver of the pickup, meanwhile, broke his left foot.
No charges have been filed from the incident.
