Bring on the cigars! Liam Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum have been cast in Independence Day 2. The film’s director, Roland Emmerich, announced the news via Twitter on Tuesday, Mar. 3.
“Excited to Officially announce @LiamHemsworth and #JeffGoldblum as the next two pieces of the #IndependenceDay sequel,” he wrote.
He also revealed that actor Jessie Usher would be kicking some alien butt. Usher, 23, has appeared on such TV shows as The Mentalist, Criminal Minds, and Survivor’s Remorse.
“Trivia: My producing partner Harald Kloser noticed Jessie in between sets of pushups at the gym and gave him an audition,” Emmerich explained. “As they say, the rest is history!”
Independence Day originally starred Will Smith (Captain Steven Hiller), Bill Pullman (President Thomas J. Whitmore), Mary McDonnell (First Lady Marilyn Whitmore), Vivica A. Fox (Jasmine Dubrow), Randy Quaid (Russell Casse), and Goldblum, who is assumed to be reprising his role as David Levinson. The 1996 adventure sci-fi grossed over $817 million, earned an Oscar in the Best Effects, Visual Effects category — and made amazing use of R.E.M.’s catchy “It’s the End of the World” song!
Independence Day 2 hits theaters on June 24, 2016.
