Cosby Show star Malcolm-Jamal Warner reunited with The View co-host and former costar Raven-Symone on Friday, Oct. 16, to discuss Ebony’s controversial November cover referencing the classic ‘80s family series.
The two former co-stars discussed the magazine’s cover, which shows a vintage portrait of the Cosby Show cast with the glass smashed over Bill Cosby’s face. The image, which has upset many fans of the sitcom, comes one year after comedian Hannibal Buress resurfaced sexual assault allegations against Bill Cosby during a stand-up show.
Since the allegations, at least 54 women have come forward. Cosby has continued to deny them.
Social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter have raised comments from fans both enraged by the cover and satisfied.
Kiernan Mayo, Ebony’s editor-in-chief, tweeted on Thursday, Oct. 15, “Black people maaaaaad and some Black people glaaaad. I love us.”
When asked about her thoughts on the cover, Symone, 29, said, “Let’s not forget that the Cosby Show was a sitcom, and not a reality show.”
In response to what the former Disney Channel star had to say, Warner noted, “We really don’t have enough time on this show to really talk about how I feel about that. That’s a show that we’re all very proud to have been on. The legacy cannot be taken away because all of the good that that show has done cannot be taken away. The generation of people of color who have chosen to go to college because they watched that show, you can’t take that away.”
In a previous interview, Warner told the Associated Press the show had been “tarnished.”
The Cosby Show aired for eight seasons and ended in 1992. Warner played Theo Huxtable, while Raven-Symone played Olivia Kendall, Warner’s character’s stepniece.
