Danny Moder

Daniel “Danny” Moder is an American cinematographer known for his work on major Hollywood films and for his long marriage to Julia Roberts. Born in Los Angeles, Moder grew up with early exposure to the entertainment industry. He graduated from Santa Monica High School and later attended the University of Colorado Boulder where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology before turning his attention to film.

Moder began his career in the mid ’90s as a production assistant, including for 1995’s Crimson Tide, and moved into camera and electrical departments on films such as The Fan (1996) and Enemy of the State (1998). He made his debut as a cinematographer on the short Kid Quick (2000) and continued to build a steady portfolio working behind the camera on both independent and studio projects.

His notable cinematography credits include Fireflies in the Garden (2008), Plush (2013), The Normal Heart (2014) and Secret in Their Eyes (2015). His work on The Normal Heart earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Cinematography in 2014.

Moder married makeup artist Vera Steimberg in 1997. He met actress Julia Roberts while working on The Mexican in 2000, and they tied the knot months after his divorce from Steimberg in 2002. They share three children: twins Hazel and Phinnaeus (born in 2004) and son Henry (born in 2007).
