
Thomas Kail
Thomas Kail is a renowned American director and producer best known for his work on Hamilton and In the Heights. Kail earned a theater degree from Wesleyan University before making his mark on Broadway.
He rose to fame in 2008 when he directed In the Heights, a musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The production won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical. His collaboration with Miranda continued with Hamilton, which debuted on Broadway in 2015 and earned Kail many Tony Awards, including Best Direction of a Musical.
On TV, he directed Fox’s 2016 musical production Grease Live! and a 2020 adaptation of Hamilton for Disney+ with the original Broadway cast. Kail also directed several episodes of 2 Broke Girls, Fosse/Verdon and We Were the Lucky Ones.
Kail was married to Broadway actress Angela Christian from 2006 to 2019. Fosse/Verdon introduced Kail to actress Michelle Williams, whom he married in 2020. The couple welcomed son Hart in 2020 and another baby in 2022. They reportedly welcomed a third child together via surrogate in 2025. (Kail is stepfather to Matilda, Williams’ daughter with the late Heath Ledger.)
