Michelle Williams

Michelle Williams is an Oscar-nominated actress known for her roles in Brokeback Mountain, Blue Valentine, My Week with Marilyn and The Fabelmans. Williams was born in Kalispell, Montana, and raised in San Diego, where she became legally emancipated from her parents at age 15 to pursue acting full time.

Williams began her career in the early ’90s with roles on Baywatch and Lassie (1994), but her breakout came in 1998 as Jen Lindley on Dawson’s Creek. The show ran for six seasons and helped launch her into Hollywood stardom. She later moved into indie films, gaining critical praise for her performances.

She earned her first Academy Award nomination for Brokeback Mountain (2005) and received additional nominations for Blue Valentine (2010), My Week with Marilyn (2011), Manchester by the Sea (2016) and The Fabelmans (2022). In 2019, she won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for playing Gwen Verdon in Fosse/Verdon. Her film credits also include Wendy and Lucy (2008), The Greatest Showman (2017) and Venom (2018).

Williams dated the late Heath Ledger, with whom she had daughter Matilda Ledger (born in 2005). She was briefly wed to Phil Elverum from 2018 to 2019 before moving on with director Thomas Kail, whom she tied the knot with in 2020. The couple welcomed their first child together in 2020 and welcomed a second child in 2022. In 2025, they welcomed a third child via surrogacy.
