Wait, did he really just say that? Chris Rock sat down with Matt Lauer on the Today show to discuss his new movie, Top Five, on Monday, Dec. 1, but the interview backfired when the comedian teased the morning show host.
"You take people inside the celebrity bubble a little bit," Lauer noted of the flick, which Rock directed and co-wrote. "You've lived in that bubble for several decades now… What would most people be surprised by inside that celebrity bubble?"
"You don't always get what you want," Rock, 49, confessed. "I love being famous! It's almost like being white! It's close to it."
Lauer then asked the uninhibited comic whether he felt pressured to be funny at all times. "People want me to be funny even at funerals," Rock responded. "People are like, 'why are you so sad?' and I'm like, 'because my aunt just died!'"
The flattery then turned to the Today show crew from Rock's comical perspective. "Today show: You guys are doing good!" he exclaimed. "You've got Ray Rice's wife on, man. You'll show Good Morning America. We got the wife on!" (The Today show scored an in-depth interview with Janay Rice, after she was a victim of a highly-publicized domestic abuse scandal involving her husband, NFL player Ray Rice.)
Bursting out into laughter, Lauer responded: "This is one of those times I should have gone to the commercial about thirty seconds ago. Too late! My bad!"
Undeterred and without a filter, Rock continued: "We'll show you, Robin Roberts! Matt Lauer is going to get sick next," he quipped in an outrageous reference to Robin Roberts' well documented bouts with cancer.
