Attention, people of Panem! On Sunday, Aug. 10, a 79-year-old film and TV icon managed to snag a Teen Choice Award surfboard for Choice Movie Villain. While others in his position may have chosen to skip the awards, Donald Sutherland embraced the show’s campy spirit and screaming audience, taking the stage to offer a special message.
“You named me the most villainous? My wife [Francine Racette] — I have been married for 42 years — my wife asked me to tell you that she agreed with you,” The Hunger Games: Catching Fire star joked. “I do not. I think, on the contrary, that I am very nice, sweet-tempered and generous. So generous in fact, that I have brought you souvenirs from Panem.”
The actor, who plays the formidable President Snow in The Hunger Games films, then opened his palm to reveal what appeared to be red pomegranate seeds, which he gleefully tossed into the audience.
“They’re berries, I wouldn’t eat them if I were you,” he added before walking off the stage.
Sutherland was making a clear reference to the first Hunger Games film in which poisonous berries called “Nightlock” were used by tributes Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) to convince the Capitol to let them both win the games.
However, if Sutherland really knew his stuff, he’d understand that the berries were blue … duh.
