When Rumer Willis was a teenager, she — like many other teens — hung posters of hot celebs on her walls. One such hunk was Ashton Kutcher. But that all changed when her mom, Demi Moore, brought Kutcher home in 2003 and later married him in 2005. At the time Willis was 17, Kutcher was 27, and Moore was 42.
“It was definitely weird for a minute, but I have to commend him,” Willis, now 26, said of Kutcher on The Howard Stern Show on SiriusXM. “He was a really great stepfather. The perspective switched quickly. That’s when you open up your Teen Beat, you take him down and put somebody else up. I feel like I told my sister that at some point, ‘Gotta cross him off the list.’”
But instead of feeling upset or resentful toward her mother, who divorced Rumer’s dad Bruce Willis in 2000, the Dancing With the Stars contestant had a very different reaction.
“No, I was kind of impressed, I was like ‘Yeah girl, get it!’” she told Stern of her reaction to her mom’s younger husband.
Willis still maintains a friendship with Kutcher, though he officially divorced Moore in 2013 and has since had a child, daughter Wyatt Isabelle, with his fiancee Mila Kunis. But it’s her parents’ relationship that still impresses her.
“It’s something that I commend them for so much,” Willis said of the former spouses (Bruce married model Emma Heming in 2009 and welcomed daughters Mabel and Evelyn in 2012 and 2014 respectively). “They made such a huge effort that we never had to split up birthdays or vacations. We literally would all go together. They had this weird thing where they literally just became friends.”
As for coming to terms with having movie star parents, Willis said she got used to it at an early age, but there’s one thing that still grosses her out.
“No one wants to hear their parents engage in any sort of sexual things so having it on film was a little awkward,” she admitted.
