Her legacy will go on! Back in 2011, Celine Dion made the daring decision to finish her career with a three-year Las Vegas residency show. Though the show was postponed in 2014 due to her husband, Rene Angelil’s, health condition, the Canadian songstress, 47, has plans to continue her run in August 2015.
She spoke to NBC Nightly News about the decision, noting that when she first announced her Vegas residency, many thought it was a bad idea. Dion added that she plans to wrap up her Grammy-winning career in Vegas.
“A lot of people, especially in the industry, they thought it was very, very high risk, finishing my career here. It was the end of my career,” she recalled. “I remember hearing that ‘the boat is going to sink again.’ They thought of that one pretty well.” The comment is, of course, a reference to Dion’s hit song “My Heart Will Go On” from the 1997 Oscar-winning film, Titanic.
But Dion wasn’t discouraged by the negativity.
“You take chances, and you go for it,” she said. “And you know what, I’m more than glad that we did it.”
Since Dion’s decision to do a residency, many other pop stars have followed suit. Britney Spears is in the middle of her multi-year residency at Planet Hollywood, Mariah Carey started hers in May, and Jennifer Lopez has announced her own upcoming residency stint.
Dion’s husband is currently battling throat cancer, but she recently told Entertainment Tonight that he is “doing really well.”
“[Rene’s] strong. We’re creating this show together,” she told ET in May. “We make changes together. He wants me back. He wants me strong, and this is what we’re doing together.”
