That sounds painful! George Clooney revealed that his true-to-the-era Roman soldier costume from Hail, Caesar! did more harm than good on set.
The Oscar winner, 54, told Us Weekly at the film’s premiere on Monday, February 1, that the costume was a bit of a problem. “It wasn’t the best,” Clooney, who married Amal Alamuddin in 2014, admitted. “[But] I had to wear it. I mean, that’s what they wore. I will tell ya, I don’t know how Rome lasted as long as it did in those outfits.”
In fact, Clooney joked, one essential part of the outfit was the definition of vintage. “I had actual original Roman undergarments — 2,000-year-old underwear,” he told Us. “Can I tell you this, though? You get a little chafing … Very unfortunate.”
Despite his uncomfortable attire, he had a blast playing his character in the Coen brother–directed film. “They always let me play the idiot, which is always the most fun,” he said, laughing.
