Community fans, rejoice! Well, kind of! Community has thrived since the beloved comedy moved from NBC to Yahoo! Screen for Season 6, and series costar Joel McHale tells HuffPost Live that the gang is ready and willing to make a movie. “I know Yahoo wants to do it, and I think all the actors will do it,” McHale (Jeff) hinted during the Wednesday, June 17, interview.
The only hitch? There’s no script written. “[Showrunner] Dan Harmon has to write it, and writing a movie script takes a while,” McHale, who’ll soon appear in The X Files reboot and host the ESPYS in July, said. “It’s not necessarily an easy thing. So he has to write it, then we’ll get around to it.”
Now that his series has found a new home digitally, McHale told HuffPost Live that he feels less pressure to keep up with the rest of the TV landscape and fight cancellation as Community has regularly done in recent years. “It’s been on for 11 years, and we’re once a week, so there’s not that pressure of everyday shows,” the actor said. “[The cast is] all my friends, so we have a good time. I don’t get sick of it.”
Airing opposite The Big Bang Theory while on NBC, Community‘s constant threat of cancellation motivated the actors and their fans to stay invested in the series. “We always did get kind of an okay [ratings] number for what we were up against, but I knew the network probably thought they didn’t understand us. That endeared us to the fans, and to Yahoo! Screen. They seem to think a lot of people are watching it,” he confirmed.
Just as his fans get psyched for Community, McHale is getting hyped for The X-Files. Talk Soup‘s host was the first actor signed for a guest starring stint on Fox’s reboot of the popular sci-fi series. He’ll play Tad O’Malley, the anchor of a conservative Internet news network who ends up working with Fox Mulder (David Duchovny).
“When I got the call to be on The X-Files, I thought it was a joke and a prank. I’m such a big fan of the show and being on the set was surreal,” McHale said. “The script is [written by] Chris Carter, so it’s amazing. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson couldn’t be more welcoming and gracious.”
