What a buzzkill. CBS announced during the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 7, that The Good Wife is ending in May, and fans weren't happy about the way the bad news was delivered.
The show's final nine episodes were promoted in a dramatic ad during the telecast and fans took to Twitter to express their dismay at the shock announcement.
"Did CBS just take out a Super Bowl ad to cancel THE GOOD WIFE," one commenter asked.
Another referenced Super Bowl halftime performer Beyoncé's habit of surprising fans with new songs and albums and wrote, "Did CBS go and Beyoncé a show cancellation?"
Others posted gifs featuring emotional reactions by the show's star, Julianna Margulies.
The ER alum, 49, hinted last month that her time as Alicia Florrick was coming to an end. "I'm unemployed come April," she said during a speech at the Casting Society of America's Artios Awards.
The legal drama, which also stars Christine Baranski, Chris Noth and Alan Cumming, debuted in September 2009 and has won five Emmy Awards. The final episode will air on CBS on Sunday, May 8.
