You don’t see that every day! Wheel of Fortune’s regular game play ended in a tie between two contestants on Wednesday, May 25. According to the show, it’s the first time this has happened in more than 10 years.
The last time the regular round ended in a draw was on March 2, 2006, according to Entertainment Weekly.
This decade’s tie happened when Danielle Gilseth of West Fargo, North Dakota, correctly guessed “hollandaise sauce” during the “Food & Drink” puzzle, ending the regular round with $24,000 total in cash and prizes.
The only issue was that LaToya Williams of Richmond, Virginia, had won the exact same amount up to that point.
Host Pat Sajak then announced there would be a $1,000 “toss-up playoff” to determine which lucky contestant would advance to the Bonus Round.
Williams quickly solved the “Occupation” puzzle and went on to win the $100,000 grand prize. Her total earnings? $125,000 and a trip to Costa Rica!
But don’t feel too bad for Gilseth. Despite losing the toss-up puzzle, she still took home her $24,000.
