Mother of fabulousness!
Game of Thrones is chock-full of badass female leads, many of whom are queens. And if there’s one thing that’s true about royals, it’s that they never have a hair out of place. (Just ask our favorite Duchess!)
But there’s no Amanda Cook Tucker in the Seven Kingdoms, and no bouncy blowouts. Instead, Queens Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), Cersei (Lena Headey), and Margaery (Natalie Dormer) prefer their tresses to be light, long, lush, and intricately styled—and Headey, for one, has a short black bob IRL!
So what’s a girl to do? Enter Kevin Alexander, who is responsible for not only wigging the actresses, but also for styling what’s underneath those extravagant pieces. Take Clarke’s ‘do, for instance. The British beauty has to sit in the chair for two hours to get her real brunette hair braided into cornrows, concealed with a bald cap, and then topped with a wig dyed a shade Alexander calls “minky platinum.”
For Headey, 41, Alexander (who is based in Brighton, England) rotates between two wigs, which he styled using a special 19-inch-long curling iron to create the ruthless royal’s signature coils. He then seals it all in place by liberally spraying L’Oreal TXT It Tousle Waves Spray ($5, Ulta.com).
And then there’s Dormer, 33, whose wig boasts two extra extensions woven into figure eights along the piece’s crown. Even wilder, to create Margaery’s especially elaborate wedding hairdo last season, Alexander created a 4.5-inch wire cage, attached flowing curls, and sewed it to the top of her wig!
Luckily for actress Sophie Turner, who plays Lady Sansa Stark, she has long, easy-to-curl locks, so she can skip the wig. But she does have to dye her strawberry blonde hair deep red—or, in the case of this season, brown—twice a month, in keeping with her character’s story line.
