This might just top Ellen DeGeneres‘ pizza giveaway. Jimmy Kimmel and the kids from Stranger Things (on wheels!) handed out peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, courtesy of Kimmel’s mom, to the star-studded crowd at the 2016 Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 18.
“I know these shows are long and I know a lot of you haven’t eaten since Labor Day, so I have a little surprise for everyone,” the Jimmy Kimmel Live host, 48, told the audience at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater before introducing his mom, Joan, who was pictured via satellite preparing the kid-friendly snack.
“My mother made 7,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches,” Kimmel explained. “Is anyone hungry right now? Let’s bring in the kids of Stranger Things to hand the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches out.”
The hit Netflix series’ stars Millie Bobby Brown, Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo then rode out from backstage on bicycles and distributed the sandwiches — packaged in brown paper bags, of course — to the stars with some help from the Emmy crew.
“Raise your hand if you have a gluten allergy,” Kimmel quipped while walking through the aisles of the theater. “I just want America to see which of their favorite celebrities are the most annoying. Also, if you’re allergic to peanuts, well, I guess this is goodbye because we can only afford one EpiPen.”
Inside of the lunch bags, the stars were treated to PBJs, cookies and apple-juice boxes — plus a note from Kimmel’s mom written on a napkin, which read, “Have fun tonight! Win or lose, your mom will always love you. Don’t get drunk. Xoxoxo Joan (Jimmy’s mom).”
The hilarious stunt was a clear nod to the 2014 Academy Awards, where host DeGeneres had pizzas delivered to the hungry A-list crowd (including Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) from Los Angeles’ Big Mama’s & Papa’s Pizzeria.
