There in spirit! Nicole Richie skipped her dad Lionel Richie‘s special tribute at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards — but she has an excuse.
The fashion designer, 34, was out of the country with her husband of five years, Joel Madden, her rep confirms to Us Weekly. The rocker is currently touring with his group, Good Charlotte, in Europe.
The mom of two — daughter Harlow, 8, and son Sparrow, 7 — may have missed out, but she did give a shout-out to her famous dad, 66, via Twitter.
“SO PROUD! Dad you are DOPE So awesome!!” Nicole tweeted on Monday night. “Wishing I was there, & beaming from across the pond! @lionelrichie #Grammys #Ltrain.”

Nicole has reason to celebrate. The “All Night Long” singer received a standing ovation following his Grammys performance at the Staples Center in L.A. Several stars — Demi Lovato, John Legend, Meghan Trainor and Luke Bryan — covered some of his greatest hits, including “Hello” and “Easy Like a Sunday Morning.” Lionel was especially blown away by Lovato’s singing chops.
Thank you to all my fans for supporting me after all these years! @GRAMMYAdvocacy #SupportMusic #GRAMMYs
