Maia Shibutani
Maia Shibutani is an Olympic ice dancer best known for her partnership with her brother Alex Shibutani, with whom she became one of the most decorated sibling teams in U.S. figure skating history. Born in New York City, Maia spent her childhood moving between Connecticut, Colorado and Michigan. She began skating at age four and later attended Huron High School in Ann Arbor before enrolling at the University of Michigan in 2012.
Maia’s career took off when she teamed up with Alex in 2004. The pair quickly rose through the junior ranks and made an impressive senior debut, earning a bronze medal at the 2011 World Championships. They became known for their precision, artistry and strong on-ice chemistry.
Known collectively as the “ShibSibs,” the pair are two-time U.S. national champions, three-time World medalists, and Four Continents champions. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, they made history by winning bronze medals in both the team event and ice dance competition, becoming the first ice dance team of Asian descent from the U.S. to medal at the Olympics. In 2023, they were inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
In 2018, Maia announced her retirement from skating alongside Alex. The following year, she underwent surgery to remove a malignant kidney tumor and later returned to health.
In 2025, Maia and Alex announced their plans to return to competitive skating ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
