Alex Shibutani
Alex Shibutani is an Olympic American ice dancer. Alex was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, alongside his sister and future dance partner, Maia Shibutani. He began skating at age 7, first competing as an individual before joining forces with his sister in 2004. He went on to graduate from Huron High School in Ann Arbor before enrolling at the University of Michigan in 2009.
Alex and Maia rose quickly through the juvenile and junior skating ranks and made their senior debut in 2011. The pair won bronze at the World Figure Skating Championships that year, making them the youngest ice dance medalists in nearly fifty years. Together, the duo became two-time U.S. national champions, and three-time World medalists, taking home silver in 2016 and bronze in 2017.
At the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, they earned bronze medals in both the team event and the ice dance competition, becoming the first ice dance team of Asian descent from the United States to medal at the Olympics. He announced his retirement alongside Maia that same year.
In January 2023, they were inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame. In 2025, he and Maia announced their plans to return to competitive skating ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
