Sting
Sting, born Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, is a musician known for being the lead singer, principal songwriter and bassist for the band The Police from 1977 to 1986 and later launching a solo career.
He graduated with a teaching degree in 1974, and during college, he performed jazz, sparking his love for music.
In January 1977, Sting moved to London to join Stewart Copeland and Henry Padovani in forming The Police. As a band, they won six Grammy Awards and two Brit Awards. Before their breakup in 1986, their final album, Synchronicity, was nominated for five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year in 1983. Their most successful songs, “Every Breath You Take” and “Roxanne,” appeared on Rolling Stone’s list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 2003, The Police was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Sting went solo in 1985, with the album The Dream of the Blue Turtles. The LP included hits such as “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free,” “Fortress Around Your Heart” and “Love Is the Seventh Wave.” Within a year, the album went triple-platinum and received four Grammy Award nominations. Sting continued to release successful albums, including The Soul Cages and Ten Summoner’s Tales, which also went triple-platinum within a year of release.
Sting reunited with The Police to open the 2007 Grammy Awards, performing “Roxanne,” and announced a reunion tour that lasted over a year. In December 2014, Sting was made a Kennedy Center Honoree, and in 2017, he was awarded the Polar Music Prize.
Sting was married to actress Frances Tomelty from 1976 to 1984. They share two children Joseph (born November 23, 1976) and Fuschia Katherine (born April 17, 1982). The controversy surrounding their split resurfaced in 2006, when it was revealed that Sting had an affair with Trudie Styler, a close friend of Tomelty.
Sting and Styler married in August 1992 and went on . Together, they share four children, Brigitte (born January 19, 1984), Jake (born May 24 1985) and Eliot (born July 30, 1990), all of whom were born before their marriage. Their fourth child, Giacomo Luke (born December 17, 1995), was born after their marriage.
